(Curation Note)

Bucket: customer.

Redcape continues to focus on portfolio expansion and renewal – and all the while is building great teams to service its venues.

Redcape’s managing director, Chris Unger, believes the group’s strong performance in 2025 has laid the foundation for an even stronger 2026.

“2025 has been an excellent year for Redcape…It has been a year that exceeded its potential and, even more pleasingly, established an exciting base for 2026 to be even better.”

In 2025, Redcape made a concerted effort to gain more of a footprint in south-east Queensland.

“We really like the growth dynamics and prospects in the region at a macro level and we think these will be favourable for the sector, so we have leaned into it further,” stated Unger.

“We think there is good long-term growth ahead, so we see it as a long-term play for us and a strategy we want to keep building through 2026 and beyond.”

Key transactions in the region include the Maeva portfolio of pubs on the Sunshine Coast, and the high-traffic Plough Inn in South Bank.

“The Maeva transaction gave us immediate scale in a high growth area with venues that were already well loved and trading well. Those venues lent themselves well to our operating model and the strategy we have so it was easy to see how that transaction was going to be additive from the outset,” explained Unger.

“The Plough is a real treat. It is in such a great location with enormous passing foot traffic, which means it does its thing week-in week-out and keeps on being busy… Additionally, in all these acquisitions, the existing teams have been great, and they’ve continued to trade well without any real changes needed.”

Key drivers

For Unger, the two main highlights for 2025 remain the focuses for 2026: continuing with venue renewals, and building strong teams. Last year, Redcape spent more than $30m on refurbishing its older venues, with “much more of that to come.”

To start, Redcape is currently putting the finishing touches on the Gladstone Hotel in Sydney’s inner-west, and has recently unveiled Dead Set, a live rock’n’roll music room in the basement of Kinselas.

“We will [also] continue to push ourselves on our bars and food channels. We have made some major leaps in those areas in the last few years with some amazingly talented people, and we have more exciting plans ahead,” stated Unger.

Redcape is also looking into building residential apartments at a few of its Sydney pub properties, but this is being approached cautiously.

“We will be careful not to get too distracted on this. There are a number of venues where adjacent uses on the surplus land makes great sense, and we will go forward with that, but only where it can enhance the pub,” said Unger.

“We have cut the alternate usage options of our venues every way possible, and pubs are almost always the highest use of property… So we will advance this in a delicate way, where we can have a viable project and improve the pub at the same time in surplus areas. We do expect to submit a DA for a 120-room hotel build on one site which is quite exciting too.”

None of this can be implemented without great teams, and this remains a key focus for Redcape, with additional investment to be made in people and capability across its marketing, entertainment, events and functions teams, plus “a major transformation” of its approach to training and development.

“One of the major limiters to the growth we can achieve is the team we have, so it has been a pleasing highlight to see the capability that we have built across many fronts over the last year and the continuation of our people-first culture along with it,” stated Unger.

“That puts us in a great place for ‘26 and beyond.”
