South Korea’s government announced that the United States reaffirmed its commitment to the existing Seoul-Washington tariff agreement regarding newly announced Section 301 tariffs. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources stated: “The U.S. side also reaffirmed its position that the existing trade agreement must be upheld.”

The U.S. announced fresh forced-labor tariffs on imports from 60 trading partners, ranging from 10-12.5 percent, effective under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act. South Korea faces 12.5 percent tariffs alongside Japan and Switzerland.

These new measures followed the expiration of temporary worldwide tariffs after the Supreme Court struck down reciprocal tariffs in February. During bilateral discussions, Korean officials, including Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan, stressed that Section 301 tariffs must remain at or below the 15 percent ceiling established in the Korea-U.S. agreement.

Last year, South Korea exported 122.9 billion to America while importing 73.4 billion, making the U.S. its second-largest trading partner. The government continues monitoring a separate Section 301 investigation into alleged overproduction affecting 16 economies, including South Korea, and pledges to work with Washington to maintain the tariff agreement’s 15 percent limit.
